Carolina Arellano / 2024 Team Fundraising

I ride for all of my family and friends who have passed away from or been affected by cancer. I ride especially for my grandmother, who died of lung cancer in 2008. She was somebody who I always kept close to my heart. Her light was warm, and she always inspired everybody around her. There was never a dull moment when I was with her. She was dedicated to helping her local community in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and when she moved to Brownsville, Texas, she was equally dedicated. My grandmother, or Abuelita Nani, as I called her, eventually volunteered with the Red Cross by helping migrants who crossed the US-Mexico border. She provided them with clothes and other essential supplies they needed to survive. With her mission and dedication to human rights, I ride for and hope to carry with me to Alaska.

As I embark on this 70-day, 4,500-mile journey across the United States and Canada, I hope to carry the stories of all the people I've lost to cancer and inspire others by educating communities on cancer awareness, prevention, and early detection.

As a rider with Texas 4000 for Cancer, we are responsible for raising at least $4,500. That's one dollar for every mile ridden. As I write this, it may seem impossible, but I can make it happen with your support.

I would greatly appreciate any amount that you can contribute to our cause. Please reach out to me if I can ride for you, a family member, a friend, or somebody you know. Thank you for reading, and I cannot wait to embark on this incredible journey with such an inspiring group of people.

Congratulations! I am so proud of you committing to ride to Anchorage! Our oldest son, Kent, rode Rockies in 2019 and it was an amazing experience. Please keep me posted on your journey and, if you would, please remember Caroline Richards as you ride.

Carolina, I loved your video, riding for your abuela y tu Madre. You said that this ride will be the hardest thing that you have done so far. Probably true. But when I talk about my Canada to Mexico ride, 1,700 miles (less than half your distance), I talk about it as the best, most fun, most amazing thing that I have ever done. I am going to bet that this ride will be the same for you. There will be difficult days, wind, rain (more wind and rain once you arrive on the west coast and start riding straight north). I rode alone, but you will have the advantage of a bunch of people to share the experience with. It will be a bike ride, but mostly it will be an experience! I remember pulling into camp after a long, tiring, wet and cold day and hitting the warm shower, that was such a great feeling of accomplishment. Take care of your body, you can't avoid feeling sore. Humans are not designed to spend 70 consecutive days on a skinny, hard bicycle seat!! And finally, an Irish blessing for you and all riders, "May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back (won't happen but do enjoy it when it does). May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields." Enjoy!!

Happy to support you! I lost my father to brain cancer in 2003, a mother-in-law to peritoneal mesothelioma in 2013, and in the last two years, I've lost two friends to cancer, the most recent on 16 February 2024. I dream of world without cancer.

About Carolina Arellano

Hello there! My name is Carolina Arellano. Thank you for taking the time to view my profile! I was born and raised in Austin, Texas, and I am a Senior at the University of Texas at Austin. I am currently studying International Relations and Global Studies and Government. My love for traveling and meeting new people is what drew me to study IRG. I hope to use this degree to pursue peaceful, democratic solutions to issues of national security concerning Latin America. I am also pursuing a Minor in French Studies and a Certificate in Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies! With this academic experience, I plan to attend law school back at UT Austin.

In my free time, you can find me cycling around Austin, pouring over the latest news on Latin American politics, or building the latest Lego Star Wars set.
